Viceroy was a pioneer in the filtered cigarette market before any other players in the market understood that filtered smokes are going to enjoy success. The brand was introduced in May of 1936 by Brown & Williamson and offered revolutionary cork-tipped cigarettes. When the cork tip filter became customary, Viceroy continued their research on filters and invented a completely new type of filter, cellulose-acetate one, in 1952. Almost all cigarettes were produced with this kind of filter after this breakthrough.
Viceroy is more popular is more popular abroad than in the US: Canadian musician Mac DeMarco even dedicated a song to this cigarette brand and named it "Ode to Viceroy".
